As a non-traditional bride, (I’m wearing a gunmetal grey dress and my future husband is in a band, we’re definitely not the traditional couple), I’ve found that finding articles much less photographs of non-traditional brides is extremely difficult.
I have researched color wedding dresses, non-traditional wedding dresses and weddings, etc and there is very little out there. Forget the fact that I’m not a size 2, that I’m not going with the “white dress” and getting married in a church…Truth is, …when I first got engaged and began looking at dresses I tried on several white dresses, they were beautiful but they weren’t me, but people were telling me I couldn’t wear white because I’ve been married before. Yeah, I’ve been married before, and I have children (who are grown and I’m expecting my first grandchild in July)–SO WHAT!!! That just pissed me off! So I looked at exactly what was considered to be the “wedding dress.” And found some gorgeous ones! And if it had been 20+ years ago I would have gotten sucked right into that fairy tale of a wedding thing.
However, I am no longer a young, naive woman. I can now think for myself. So I kept going back to the gunmetal grey or silver wedding dresses (prom dresses, etc). And while out trying on various types of wedding dresses (tea-length, white, champagne, ivory, soft-white, etc) I ended up seeing a gunmetal grey prom dress. I HAD to try it on! Had to.
And I did. And that was it. But what bridesmaid dresses go with a gunmetal grey dress? What flowers? What….????? Try finding a color palette out there for non-traditional weddings. SO I looked at a color wheel. thought about what my favorite colors are, what I like, what my bridesmaids like and how they look and their personalities…AND wa la!!! Stuck with the little black dress theme for my bridesmaids with silver shoes, and we’re going with red as an accent color (flowers, etc).
By the way, my wedding has a music theme…
