Day 24 – Your favorite movie and what it is about.
One of my favorite movies of all time: A Beautiful Mind.
The movie is about John Nash and it’s based on a true story. Nash goes to Princeton for graduate school and majors in Mathematics. He’s sort of an odd duck there. But he makes friends. He wins the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1994. Nash is brilliant but a bit antisocial, as well as somewhat arrogant. Though he is an odd duck, he makes friends with Charles, his roommate at Princeton, and Alicia Larde, one of his students when he was teaching at M.I.T. in the early 1950’s. He marries Alicia, and as time passes Nash lives more and more within himself. He has hallucinations and is eventually hospitalized for schizophrenia. But Alicia stands by him, even when she isn’t sure it is safe to.
Who is real? Who isn’t? What is real? What isn’t?
The movie depicts Nash as brilliant, a genius, but as crazy. He goes mad. He slowly learns to differentiate between what is real, as well as who is real. While watching the movie my heart broke…for him and for his wife and what they went through. You get a real sense of the strength of character of Nash, as well as his love for Alicia. The movie is heartbreaking at times, funny at times, and interesting. I used to own it, actually had two copies of it, but both of them turned up missing. It’s definitely time to get a new copy.
